Our History
Celebrating 150 Years of Faith and Community
Mandarin United Methodist Church in Jacksonville proudly marked its 150th anniversary on Sunday, November 17, 2024, with a heartfelt celebration. Founded in 1874, this historic church is the second-oldest continuously operating church in the Mandarin community and one of Jacksonville’s oldest congregations. Located at 11270 San Jose Boulevard, the church has served as a cornerstone of faith and community through generations.
The day’s festivities began with a special morning worship service, followed by a pot-luck dinner on the grounds. Members and guests gathered to share a meal, with attendees bringing side dishes and desserts. The celebration featured performances by various singing groups, including the debut of a song composed for the 150th anniversary. Guests also enjoyed a short film showcasing the church’s rich history.
Reflecting on the milestone, Senior Pastor Britt Gilmore expressed gratitude for the generations who have worshiped and served through Mandarin UMC. “This anniversary provides an opportunity to give thanks for many generations who have faithfully worshiped God and served this community,” Pastor Gilmore said. “We hope this anniversary celebration may inspire us to love God and neighbor in a new season.”
A Legacy of Faith and Service
Mandarin UMC was founded at a time when the Mandarin community was home to notable figures such as author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The church’s first pastor, Dr. T.W. Moore, made significant contributions to the community, including the discovery of the nearby Fruit Cove area and serving as Florida Southern College’s fourth president. Over its 150-year history, the congregation has worshiped at three locations in Mandarin, settling at its current 10-acre site in 1960.
The church’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the development of the Mandarin community, predating both the United Methodist Church’s 1968 formation and the 1970 completion of the Buckman Bridge. With nearly 60 pastors serving the congregation since its founding, Mandarin UMC has long been a hub of worship, education, and community engagement.
Today, Mandarin UMC continues to be an integral part of the Mandarin community, offering a variety of ministries and events, including Upward Sports, a fall pumpkin patch and crafts festival, a Christmas tree lot, and the Learning Ladders preschool. With its motto, “150 Years and Our Story is Still Unfolding,” the church celebrates its past while looking forward to its future.
